Coming of Age Video: From Baby Photos to Adulthood

4 min read

A coming of age video shows a young person growing from a baby to the age they are celebrating, in about a minute. Put one photo per stage in order and each age flows into the next, with no editing and no special skills.

Make a coming of age video

Which milestones suit it

  • 13th birthday and religious or cultural coming-of-age days, such as a bar or bat mitzvah.
  • Quinceañera or Sweet 16, where a video of the years so far often opens the celebration. See also the Sweet 16 guide.
  • 18th birthday, the move to adulthood.
  • 21st birthday, a last look back at childhood.
  • Leaving home or starting university, as a gift from the family.

Which photos to use

Choose one photo for each stage, with the age steps spread out evenly:

  1. A newborn or baby photo
  2. A toddler photo
  3. The first day of school
  4. A primary school photo
  5. An early teenage photo
  6. The most recent photo, taken for the occasion

With 5 photos (Starter, $4.90) you get about 20 seconds; with 8 to 12 photos you get 35 to 55 seconds and room for each phase. Choose photos where the face is clear and not covered by sunglasses, a mask or a hand. For more detail, see how to choose photos for a growing up video.

Ways to share it

  • At the celebration, played before the speeches or the toast.
  • As a gift from parents, sent on the morning of the day.
  • As a family gift, where grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends each add a photo from a different year. One person collects them, puts them in order and makes the video.
  • Privately, as a keepsake for the person to watch later.

A note on young people's photos

Many of these photos are of children and teenagers, so here is exactly what happens: your photos are used only to make your video and are deleted automatically 30 days after you create the project. Download the MP4 before then. The privacy policy has the details. Make sure the person is happy to have their photos used.

Make it in four steps

  1. Gather 2 to 24 photos of the person (JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC).
  2. Put them in order from youngest to oldest.
  3. Choose a plan and pay once. No subscription.
  4. Download the MP4 and share it anywhere.

If one transition does not look right, redo just that one: Starter includes 2 redos and larger plans 3 to 5. Photos and videos are deleted automatically after 30 days, so download your MP4 before then.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Photos out of order. The video goes from the first photo to the last, so the order you set is the order people see.
  • Hidden faces. Sunglasses, masks, hands and heavy filters make a transition harder to read. Pick a photo where the face is clear.
  • Too many similar photos. Two photos a year apart look alike. Space the ages out evenly.
  • Using only recent photos. The contrast with the baby photos is what makes the video land.

FAQ

What is a coming of age video?

A short video that shows a young person growing up, from baby photos to the age they are celebrating, with each photo flowing into the next.

How many photos do I need?

Between 2 and 24. Five photos make a simple video of about 20 seconds; 8 to 12 give a fuller story.

Can I play it at a party or ceremony?

Yes. You get an MP4 that plays on laptops, phones and any screen or projector that plays video files. Test it on the actual equipment first.

Can family and friends add photos?

Yes, by sending you their photos. One person collects them, puts them in order and makes the video.

Are my photos kept?

Photos and videos are deleted automatically 30 days after you create the project. Your photos are used only to make your video. Read the privacy policy.

What if a transition looks wrong?

Redo that one transition. Starter includes 2 redos, and larger plans include 3 to 5. If the video fails to generate, you get a full refund; the rest is in the refund policy.

Is there a watermark or a subscription?

No. You pay once and download an MP4 without a watermark.
