Birthday Video Ideas: A Life in Photos, Year by Year

2 min read

A birthday is a measuring stick: another year, another chapter. A growing up video makes that visible. Instead of a pile of pictures, the person watches themselves change, smoothly, from the first photo to the latest.

Which birthdays suit it best

  • First birthday: a baby's first year, month by month, to show how fast it goes.
  • 18th and 21st: a coming-of-age moment, from newborn to adult in under a minute.
  • 30th, 40th, 50th: a decade-by-decade story that makes everyone laugh at the old haircuts.
  • 60th, 80th, 90th: a life told in a handful of photographs, and often the gift that gets watched on repeat.

What you need

Between 2 and 24 photos of the same person, in order from youngest to oldest. Each pair of photos turns into a transition of about 5 seconds, so 8 photos give roughly 35 seconds and 12 photos just under a minute.

How many to use:

  • 5 photos (Starter plan, $4.90) for a quick and simple video: baby, child, teenager, adult, today.
  • 12 photos for a 40th or 50th, with a photo from every phase of life.
  • 16 to 24 photos for a big milestone where each decade deserves its own moment.

If you are not sure which photos to use, read how to choose photos for a growing up video. The short version: clear faces, even steps in age, nothing that hides the face.

A surprise worth planning

The best birthday videos are a surprise. A few ways to use it:

  • Play it at the party, between the cake and the toast.
  • Send it on the morning of the birthday as a message to the birthday person.
  • Give it as a gift from a group: everyone sends one photo, one person puts them in order and makes the video. Collecting a photo from each friend or family member is also a nice way to make the person feel loved before they see anything.

Get the photos

Look in phone galleries, old family albums and shared folders. For printed photographs, photograph them in daylight or use a scanner. JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC (iPhone) files all work. A slightly worn print can still work if the face is readable.

Make it

  1. Gather 2 to 24 photos of the person.
  2. Put them in order from youngest to oldest.
  3. Choose a plan and pay once. No subscription and no watermark.
  4. Download the MP4 and share it anywhere.

If one transition does not look right you can redo just that one (the Starter plan includes 2 redos, the other plans 5). Photos and videos are deleted automatically after 30 days, so download and keep your MP4.

Create your video for the next birthday, or look at the plans first.
